One of my recent favorite authors has been Alexis Daria. While I eagerly await her third Primas of Power book, as well as the upcoming republishing of her Dance Off novel Take the Lead, I decided to celebrate today’s winter solstice with a reading of her short story, Solstice Miracle.
Summary
Rina, who recently inherited her grandmother’s house in Connecticut, makes ends meet by doing improv work as a witch. A local man she’s interested in, Miguel, shows up on the winter solstice with his niece and nephew: The kids are hoping for a solstice miracle, and they think Rina’s witchy persona could help them. The four of them spend a few hours together, bringing hope to the kids’ hearts and potentially love to the adults’ hearts.
Review
Solstice Miracle is a sweet story, but also more emotional than I’d expected, given its shorter length. Rina is a librarian by day and a YouTube witch by night, using the extra income to repair her late grandmother’s house. That house is the reason she moved Connecticut earlier that year, leaving behind a bad boyfriend in New York City. She has a crush on a guy she sees at the library, Miguel, but neither has made a move yet. When Miguel unexpectedly arrives at her door with his niece and nephew (his late sister’s kids), he’s hoping Rina can help bring hope to the young children.
It’s cute to see Rina, Miguel, and the kids go around town, finding little bits of magic. Rina is helping the kids connect with their late mother, which is at once tender and heart-wrenching.
Meanwhile, this time together may be what Miguel and Rina need to finally pursue a relationship with each other. It’s a nice love story, even with a such a tear-jerking backdrop.
Final Thoughts
Solstice Miracle is a quick read that is gentle and wholesome, filled with subtle romance and heartfelt family love. I also look forward to reading its companion piece, Solstice Dream.

Official Summary
Two people who’ve written off love and magic find a little of both on the longest night.
After inheriting her grandmother’s house in suburban Connecticut, Rina Minkin revives her witchy improv character to help pay for necessary home repairs. When Miguel Alvarez shows up at her front door with two kids in need of a Winter Solstice miracle, even cynical Rina can’t turn them away. And the longer she spends with them, the more she wants them to stick around.
