In the past year, I’ve loved both of Virginia Heath‘s Merriwell Sisters novels. So when I saw that she has a festive short story, Say Yule Be Mine, I figured now was the perfect time to read it. It’s included in the holiday anthology, Merry Christmas, Belles and Rakehalls (which I plan to read in its entirety next year!).
Summary
Freddie’s parents need him to marry as soon as possible, and the lucky bride must come with a significant dowry, because the family has reached financial ruin. While his parents present him with the three best options (i.e., the women with the biggest dowries), Freddie instead takes interest in another woman: Susanna, the smart and hard-working cousin of one of the frivolous bride contestants. Susanna and Freddie have chemistry… but with his financial woes, how can they make it work?
Review
Like Virginia Heath’s longer novels, Say Yule Be Mine is such a fun and light-hearted little romance! It has the classic setup: Titled man in financial ruin needs wealthy bride… but doesn’t want the right woman. In this case, the three “best” (richest) women at his family’s party are, in Freddie’s words, “ghastly heiresses” that he’s utterly repelled by. Freddie’s unhappy parents have put him into a tricky spot, and while Freddie wants to save the estate, he’s having a hard time committing to his fate. Especially when he meets Susanna, a woman without a dowry… but who’s otherwise so perfect for him!
Susanna and Freddie are so compatible and such a cute couple. They connect right away. They’re both smart and hard-working, and Susanna wants to help him. She even concocts a plan that could resolve some issues, but Freddie is afraid to see how it would all work out.
This is a short and sexy story with some big surprises along the way. I like the emphasis on finances and needing to work—an aspect of life I don’t always see in historical romances—and still finding a happily ever after along the way.
Final Thoughts
Say Yule Be Mine is a charming, funny, and romantic short story perfect for the holiday season. It’s part of the anthology Merry Christmas, Belles and Rakehalls, which I plan to read all of next year. Meanwhile, I also look forward to Virginia Heath’s next Merriwell Sisters book, Never Wager with a Wallflower.

About the Author

When lifelong insomniac Virginia Heath was a little girl, she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. She did this every night for over forty years until one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Now, to her absolute delight and utter astonishment, her slightly racy Regency Romcoms are published in many languages across the globe.
When she isn’t furiously writing romance fuelled on far too much English tea, she likes to travel to far flung places, shop for things she doesn’t need and drag her long suffering husband and her devoted Labrador Trevor on long walks around her native London.
And in case you were wondering, three Romantic Novel of the Year Award nominations and twenty-five books later, it still takes Virginia forever to fall asleep.
