My Demon Hunter

Following the reprint of My Funny Demon Valentine in January, Aurora Ascher‘s second Hell Bent novel, My Demon Hunter, is out today. Here, instead of focusing on one of the four “brother” demons escaped from Hell, it follows the hunter sent to find them and his decision to find a human pet—ahem, girlfriend. Mist ends up with Lily, a powerful former witch who might hold the keys to his freedom.

Why I Chose This Book:

My Funny Demon Valentine was such a fun read, and I couldn’t wait to continue the series. Mist (Mishetsumephtai) was introduced in the first book, and he’s even more clueless on how to interact with humans than the other demon brothers. I knew My Demon Hunter would be another funny, escapist read.

What I Liked:

  • Hilarious demon-human interactions. At the beginning, Mist doesn’t understand a lot abut people or how to talk to them. For starters, he refers to girlfriends as pets. He doesn’t get the point of movies, he’s not sure how to buy ice cream at the store, and he doesn’t see the purpose of phones. This makes for some silly conversations when he first meets Lily.
  • Lily is so shy! She’s an introvert with lots of self-doubt, and I love how she comes into herself throughout the book. Mist raises her self-confidence, but she ultimately becomes the savior here, which I really loved.
  • Mist is so sweet! After years enslaved and forced to hunt other demons, he just wants to be free and find some happiness. He’s new to it all, but I love how he treats Lily and eventually comes to see his own self-worth.
  • Demon interactions. While their conversations with humans are funny, I also love seeing the demons talking to each other. They’re so playful, rude, angry… just silly, brotherly interactions all around. They feature slightly less here than in the first book (Mist isn’t one of the four brothers, after all), but they show up enough and are always a highlight.

What Didn’t Work for Me:

  • It all unfolds so fast! This book leans into instalove and a rapid timeline. I would have liked if there was more time for Mist and Lily’s relationship to develop before the Hellish drama started.

Audiobook:

Kirsten Leigh does a marvelous job of narrating My Demon Hunter. Her voice seamlessly captures the different personalities, the nuances of each scene, and the overall lighthearted vibe throughout the novel. If she narrates the subsequent books in the series, I will happily listen to each one!

Final Thoughts

My Demon Hunter picks up right where the first novel left off, bringing those demons back for more while also introducing Lily and a few other characters (who will appear more in later books). Mist and Lily are so cute together, and I love how theirs turns into a story of rescue and unbreakable connection. It all goes by so fast, but this book is equal parts fun and full of heart.

The Hell Bent series will continue to be republished by Kensington this year, and you can bet I’ll be reading all of it! Meph and Iris get their story in Demon with Benefits, out this July, with Guardian Demon and Beauty and the Demon set to follow after that. Stay tuned for those reviews!

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Official Summary

LIMITED EDITION FIRST PRINTING featuring sprayed edges, designed chapter headers, full color inside covers, and front cover foil with spot gloss—while supplies last!

For fans of Jenna Levine, Hannah Nicole Maehrer, and K.F. Breene, the steamy, laugh-out-loud paranormal romance about learning how to love—including the darkest parts of ourselves—complete with HEA, clothes-ripping-hot love scenes, and a crew of devilish demon brothers who are supposed to be the bad guys . . .

From the instant New York Times bestselling author of SANCTUARY OF THE SHADOW and MY FUNNY DEMON VALENTINE!

The hunter shall become the hunted . . . And the timid shall become the fierce.

Enslaved to an evil demon queen for millennia, Mishetsumephtai has only ever served one purpose. He is the Hunter, the one who drags the guilty back to Hell.  But finally tasting freedom on Earth has changed him, and for the first time, Mist questions his duty. The human female who smiles at him with no idea what a monster he is, draws him in, and he’ll do anything to possess her.

Lily Donovan thought the most dangerous thing about running to the corner store at night would be the aisles of junk food. She didn’t bargain on encountering chaos in the form of a man with unusual tattoos and beguiling amber eyes, stalking her through the ice cream section. Since the death of her parents, Lily has tried to forget what she is. But denial is not an option when she’s confronted with everything she’s been running from.

Neither Mist nor Lily can ignore the burning magnetism between them. But Mist’s reprieve from Hell was always temporary, and the punishment for disobedience will be worse than death. Yet he can’t relinquish the woman whose scent calls to him like nothing he’s hunted before.

Aurora Ascher

Aurora Ascher is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling fantasy & paranormal romance author. She loves misunderstood monsters, redeemable anti-heroes, and epic happily-ever-afters.

A piano player since she was five years old, Aurora didn’t expect to become a writer until her first book popped into her head one day and wouldn’t leave her alone until she wrote it down. She hasn’t stopped since.

When not on tour with her hip-hop-prog band, Aurora sits in her tiny office and writes like a fiend. A woman of many creative pursuits, she is also a digital artist and enjoys bringing her characters to life through another medium. She’s a total coffee snob and has invested a great deal of time into perfecting her latte art.

Before settling in Montreal with her husband, Aurora spent several years travelling in Asia, Australia and her own huge country. Though she loves the city, the mountains and lakes of British Columbia where she grew up will always be her homeland.
