Not You Again

Erin La Rosa is an author I’ve been wanting to read for a couple of years, and I’ve finally started with her newest release, Not You Again. Carly and Adam are two strangers, but both are having a terrible day. Carly is in town for her dad’s funeral; Adam just found out his wife cheated and he’s getting divorced. The only bright spot in the day is the solar eclipse that happens. But imagine how bad it is when you have to wake up and repeat the same day! Adam, Carly, and the whole town of Julian, California are stuck in a time loop, and it’s enough to make anyone go a little loopy. But Carly and Adam soon team up to put a stop to it all… and maybe heal and find love, too.

What I Liked:

  • Solar eclipses and astronomy! A solar eclipse on April 23rd is what starts this whole time loop. Adam is a nerd who dreams of being an astronomer, and he commits himself to tracking the solar eclipse, watching for any changes. I’m a nerd at heart, too, so I loved this whole side of the story. I also enjoyed that, for a paranormal romance, this is far more in the realm of science fiction than fantasy—that’s different from most of the books I’ve read.
  • Time loop and finding new ways to keep it interesting. Anytime a story is built on a premise of repetitiveness, it can be an uphill battle for the author to keep readers’ attention. Here, she employs a few tricks, from skipping past the first few hundred days of the loop to sending characters missing. Adam and Carly are also actively trying to figure out how to escape the loop, which adds a sense of mystery.
  • Grieving her dad. Carly begins every loop at her dad’s funeral, and she feels terrible about the last things she said to him in life. I know what it’s like to lose a dad too soon, so I really related to what Carly was going through here.
  • Learning to go after your dreams. Adam never went after his dreams of being an astronomer, instead choosing to take over his parents’ business to build a secure life. But is it too late for him to finally do what he loves? This time loop may provide the lessons he needs to be brave in his career.

What Didn’t Work for Me:

  • So many questions at the end! Adam and Carly spend so much time trying to figure things out, so I was a bit dissatisfied by lack of resolution.

Audiobook:

Mela Lee does a great job of narrating Not You Again. She bring the emotions front and center, making for an engaging listen all the way through.

Final Thoughts

Not You Again is a cute, fun, and at times emotional paranormal romance for anyone who likes time loops and characters in their 30s. This is my first Erin La Rosa book, and I look forward to reading more. I’ve especially been eyeing The Backtrack and Plot Twist, so hopefully I’ll get to those soon!

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Official Summary

They have nothing but time…to hate each other.

In Julian, California, every day is April 23rd—and in a time loop, there are no rules. Eating endless slices of fresh apple pie? Yes. Partner swapping? Why not. Being trapped inside the plot of a sci-fi film would almost be inspiring for LA screenwriter Carly Hart…if she wasn’t waking up at her dad’s funeral every single day. Carly wants out.

Funeral director Adam Rhodes is equally frustrated. Every loop, Adam regenerates in the middle of a fight with his ex-wife. Her infidelity wrecked their perfect life together, and now Adam must relive her confession over and over again.

There’s only one solution to ending the misery: breaking the time loop. Easier said than done. And there’s another hurdle to overcome: Carly and Adam can’t stand each other.

Though strangers at best, Carly and Adam know they must work together to solve this cosmic mystery. But where Carly offers magical theories, Adam relies on facts and figures. When Carly wants to involve the local conspiracy theorist, Adam would rather work alone. The sooner they find a solution, the sooner they’ll never have to see each other again, yet somehow the tension between the two is hotter than a solar flare and as rare as the daily total solar eclipse. Maybe Carly and Adam are destined to be in each other’s orbit after all…

FOR FANS OF:

  • Enemies to lovers
  • A literal roll in the hay
  • A magical time loop
  • Small town vibes
  • Open-door spice
  • Dual POV
