You Won’t Forget Me

Happy book birthday to You Won’t Forget Me by Mazey Eddings! This was one of my most anticipated romances this year. It’s my first time reading this author, but I always love a book with music at its core.

Here, Cubby Clark is the frontwoman for an up-and-coming band, but they’re off to a rough start after their previous bandmate (and her ex-boyfriend) abruptly goes solo and achieves overnight success. Worse, his debut single is bashing Cubby, painting her to be the bad guy in their breakup. And even worse than that, now he’s stolen one of her songs, too. As Cubby and her remaining (and new) bandmates struggle to record their debut album, she’s battling media scrutiny, a publicity relationship with the band’s keyboardist Harry, and growing feelings for her best friend and bassist, Darcy… except they’re both straight, right?

What I Liked:

  • Music! I may sound like a broken record (pun intended), but I’ll always say it: I love books centered on music. Cubby, Darcy, Harry, Kale, and Skull are in a band now called Tea Time Tantrum, and they’re busy writing and recording their first album. We get insight into their creative process, performing on stage, and the hidden business side of things. Cubby’s entire personal life has become the center of attention, much to her chagrin. She doesn’t want fame and manufactured love triangles. Why can’t it all just be about the music instead? Will her band ever make it out of this shadow they’re under thanks to her shameless ex?
  • Depression representation. A core part of Cubby’s identity is her frequently gloomy state. For years she’s seen it as a problem in her, something that makes her hard to love and hard to relate to. She fears that people don’t want to hear sad songs from her, so she mutes parts of herself. This is all worsened by her increasing obsession over the mean comments about her online. It’s painful to see her going through all this, but I appreciated getting this kind of character as our protagonist, seeing how Darcy helps her through it, and seeing Cubby find her happily ever after anyway.
  • Queer awakening. Up until now, Cubby’s always assumed she’s straight; she’s only dated guys. Darcy, too, has seemed straight this whole time. So why are these two best friends practicing kissing and accidentally hooking up? Hmm! I loved seeing Cubby and Darcy find their way to recognizing what their relationship can be—in spite of Darcy’s awful parents and in spite of all the drama in Cubby’s love life as it is. This is the perfect friends-to-lovers story.

Audiobook:

Abi Hardiman does a marvelous job of capturing all of Cubby’s nuances throughout You Won’t Forget Me. She’s such a vibrant character—opinionated, moody, dramatic, passionate, funny—and it all comes through here. The narrator does the various accents well, from English and Irish to Icelandic. And here’s an extra treat for anyone listening: This audiobook also comes with numerous music performances, really bringing Tea Time Tantrum to life. The lyrics included in the book are rounded out with instruments and melody, allowing us to fully hear the band. This was an excellently produced audiobook!

Final Thoughts

You Won’t Forget Me is an emotional, heartfelt, inspiring romance for all the music fans out there. I absolutely loved this book for the relationship between Cubby and Darcy, but also for the whole band. (Also can Harry get his own love story next please? With a certain someone else we saw here, perhaps?) I’m excited to read more from Mazey Eddings!

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Official Summary

From USA Today bestselling author Mazey Eddings comes a dazzling sapphic romance about fame, friendship, and falling for the one person you were never meant to.

Lost. Reckless. In love.

Cubby Clark is the heart of her band—loyal, earnest, and determined to make music that matters. But just as they’re about to break out, Connor, her on-again, off-again boyfriend walks away . . . and rockets to solo fame with a hit song tearing her down.

Left with a fractured band, a publicly adored and toxic ex, and relentless writer’s block, Cubby is barely holding it together.

The only thing keeping her steady are her friends and bandmates Darcy and Harry. Especially Darcy—bright, magnetic, and more guarded than she lets on. But, when a seemingly romantic photo of Cubby and Harry goes viral the same night Cubby and Darcy hook-up, the inseparable pair begin to fracture.

Thrust into a whirlwind tour, Cubby and Darcy are forced into close quarters. Now Cubby has one summer to decide what she’s willing to risk. Walking away would be easier. But staying might mean everything.
